Archaeological Pottery from the Athenian Agora Excavations

Object before treatment

Object after treatment
Condition before treatment
The object comes in 32 fragments. There are 24 fragments, which can be joined together and form half of the rim with a complete handle and part of the body. There are also 8 body fragments, which are non-joining.
The vessel is glazed both on its interior and exterior surfaces and has red linear decoration running horizontally along the body directly below the handle. The glaze is in good condition but has some losses particularly on the one side of the remaining object. Overall, the
fragments are stable and contain minor soiling from burial and some insoluble salts.
Treatment
-
The fragments were cleaned using water and a brush and left to air-dry.
-
Any further insoluble salts deposits, which could be removed without affecting the underlying surface, were removed mechanically with a scalpel under magnification.
